Grade 2 - the 7-year-old

As you can see below, two chapters deal with the human body. The child can learn about the major systems of the human body. I repeat that it is important to teach them the proper names for these system: muscular, skeletal, digestive, circulatory, excretory, and nervous. They can learn the different organs of the body and the function of each one. Have the child lie down on a big page of poster paper. Trace around the body, then have them put their organs in the proper place. There should be a major emphasis on proper and healthy eating habits, the food groups, and the food pyramid.

As the children study the topics in chapters 9 and 10, they can be introduced to the life cycle of different kinds of animals, study social insects like ants and bees, and learn the parts of the animals such as insects. They can learn about metamorphosis and hibernation. They can learn to identify good and harmful insects. I repeat that videos and books including the USBORNE and Dorling Kindersley books are very colorful, visual, and useful to teach all these concepts as well as other trade books that you can check out of the library.

Chapter 8 covers the subject of magnets. Teach them the law of magnetic attraction (study how the different poles attract or repel each other). Children love to use a compass. Take it with you on short and long trips and teach them beginning orienteering. Children should begin to explore other subjects in the physical sciences: pulleys, levers, and gears, wedges, screws, and inclined planes.
